Attack of the Green Poo

This is such a typical parent post. If you don't have kids you may be like "gross - I don't care about baby poo". If so, then come back another day. Maybe, it's like a train wreck and you can't help your curiosity. If so, then don't say I didn't warn you!

I think, (crossing fingers) that Dex's digestive system has finally matured a bit. He has gone about 5 days since the last colicky mystery gas pain. He's spitting up less most of the time, though there's still a good amount falling from my shoulder and hitting the floor at least a couple times a day. (Thankfully, we have hardwood floors and a dog.) He burps like a frat boy sometimes, but even that is getting to be a little less often. This seems to have coincided with his poo changing from a yellow-ish mustard color to green. Sometimes it's bright green and sometimes it looks like the color of steamed spinach. I wasn't concerned until I saw the spinach color.

Poop is one of the ways to tell if a baby is sick. I immediately took his temperature under his arm, and it was one degree higher than normal. Oh no - fever and green poop! Oh my! What else was abnormal? He slept so long last night, a whole 6 and a half hours! He's still sleeping a lot still too and is a little fussier than usual when he's awake! I started thinking something was wrong with him. The internet got me worried because drastic changes in poo and even slight fevers can be bad news. I called the doctor and they said to bring him in.

I took him in and he got checked over. I think he loves the doctor's office because once he got some attention, he woke up smiling and cooing. The nurse kinda looked at me like I was crazy thinking this smiling little bundle of joy was sick. The resident (the medical center is part of a school) looked him over. He asked the typical questions - Is he eating ok? How much has he eaten today? Is he sleeping more? Is he crying more than usual? How much higher was his temperature? Has he had diarrhea? Have you eaten anything unusual? All while Dex is alert and gurgling away at the doctor. The resident then says that there probably isn't anything seriously wrong because he's awake and looks happy. If something was wrong, then his temperament would change. His temperature wasn't anything to worry about because it wasn't higher than 38C and babies sometimes just have odd colored bowel movements. I kept offering to show him the nasty spinach diaper that I packed up and brought, but he wasn't having it. He brought in the doctor who also looked him over, asked the same questions and also wouldn't look at the diaper. By this point, I kinda felt like an idiot taking my baby to the doctor for a one degree temperature and green poop. The doctor said not to worry about the green color. If it turned black, then bring him in. He jokingly pointed at my green car seat, green diaper bag, green blanket and said that maybe Dex was absorbing all the green around him (little does he know that's just the tip of the iceberg) and maybe he just wanted to please me with his green poo.

I'm pleased Dexter! I'm pleased indeed.
