Not as Bad as it Looks

Dex went to the pediatric cardiologist today for an EKG to check on a heart murmur his doctor heard. Ordinarily, heart murmurs are not a big deal in infants because they usually go away with time, but Mr. Cobra was born with an unusual heart problem that passed as a heart murmur until he was 28. Luckily, his heart issue was fixable by surgery, which he had last November. We mentioned Mr. Cobra's history to our pediatrician, so we were referred to the cardiologist just to make sure that Dexter didn't have something more serious. Dexter got a very thorough looking over, and he didn't cry at all. He was awake the whole time and seemed more intrigued than anything by all the different people he saw (5 total) that poked, prodded and thumped him. He sat pretty still when he was getting his blood pressure taken with a miniature blood pressure cuff. I'm pretty sure he thought it was some sort of fun game like what I do with him while changing his diaper or his clothes. The doctor said we probably shouldn't have another baby because Dex was too good. He said we should have him cloned instead.

The verdict is that he doesn't have a heart murmur at all. He has a very, very tiny pinhole in his heart that is creating a high pitched squeak when the blood goes through it that sounds a bit like a murmur. It's absolutely nothing to worry about and will probably close on it's own in the next few months. It's fairly common, and if it's still there in 6-9 months, then we'll see the cardiologist again. Even then, he said that they won't do anything because it's not serious. Dex is a happy, healthy little boy who's heart squeaks.
