Dexter is officially 2 months old. We went for his 2 month check-up last Thursday and he weighed 12lbs 0.6oz, is 22.5" long! He's growing really well and a little ahead of his growth percentile on his weight, so he's doing well as Baron von Boobysucker (that was his nickname before even being born). He's ahead on all his developmental milestones and wowed the doctor with his amazing head control and did a great push-up when we put him on his tummy. He is soo strong! He even demonstrated his new trick of standing straight up with me balancing him. He was quite the flirt with the doctors too. He was smiling and cooing at them and trying to grab the stethoscope. He didn't mind getting looked over at all. The only trouble spots he has is gas pains, spitting up and a goopy eye - all of which he'll outgrow eventually. He's still colicky a bit, but it will be over soon. They usually grow out of it by 3 months, so just one more month of it!
He also got his vaccinations while at the doctors. I was a total mess thinking I wasn't going to be able to sleep and that Dex was just going to cry for hours. I felt so bad for him having to get vaccinated. I had no idea it was going to be 3 shots (he couldn't get the fourth because it had only been 3 weeks since the last one)and a shotglass of oral junk. He drank the Rotavirus one just fine. They also gave him some infant Tylenol drops. Then the nurse had me distract him and did the 3 shots in less than a minute. Poor baby just wailed for a couple minutes. He had tears coming out of his eyes and just looked so upset. I had tears in my eyes too. I didn't expect that. As soon as the nurse was done I acted all happy and just smiled and played with him like it wasn't a big deal. It worked like a charm and he stopped crying pretty quickly.
By the time I walked to Walgreens for some more Tylenol and walked home, he was out cold. He woke up to feed three hours later, around 9pm, and then didn't wake up again till 3:30 am! A six and a half hour stretch! Of course I'm worried about him because he just got his shots. He proceeded to worry me more by sleeping almost all day the next day. He woke up to feed ok, but never really stayed awake for more than an hour after eating until a day and a half later. He's done that before, but the timing was just so close to his vaccinations that it worried me. Now I'm still worried even though he's been up quite a bit the last 2 days. I'm sure he was just sleeping off the assault on his immune system from the shots.
Vaccinations have such a bad reputation. I did some research and figured the benefits outweigh the risks. We live in a city that attracts people from all over the world. I feel safer knowing Dex is safe from diseases that aren't that necessarily prevalent in the U.S. If I didn't live in such a densely populated area, I might have decided to wait to get him vaccinated until it was required for school. He's now safe from the diseases, I just wonder if he's safe from the vaccine.
