38 Weeks

Yesterday was a bit traumatic. I had 2 doctor appointments, one OBGYN appointment and a follow-up to the glucose monitoring I had been doing last week. My sugar was very high in the mornings after breakfast. Once, it was only 7 points from having to call the doctor. The problem was that I tried taking more prednisone to help with the discomfort in my hands. It did help, but my blood sugar went through the roof. I went back to my normal dosage within 3 days - it was just that dramatic. Now my blood sugar is still high, but not as bad.

The doctor gave me a choice since it is so close to my due date 1) do nothing and face some potential risks to the baby or 2) take insulin and possibly make a small difference in risk to the baby in the amount of time that's left. I chose option 2 because not only does it ease the potential risk to the baby, but it also will be better for me since I am already genetically prone to being diabetic.

So what changed? I have to take 2 insulin shots a day to bring my sugar down. I also see a doctor every week to go over my blood sugar monitoring which I have to do with every meal now. I also have 2 antenatal monitoring appointments every week. We have an ultrasound next week to see how big he is. Babies from mothers with gestational diabetes tend to be bigger. The doctor is talking about inducing me, but I'm hoping our son makes his debut soon to avoid going to the doctor 3 times a week. UGH!
