Today we received an email. I don't ordinarily read an email 10 times to make sure I wasn't imagining things, but today I did. It was an acceptance letter for a new, technology-driven private school. It is everything I would want to do in a homeschool environment with lots of field trips and wrapping curriculum around a child's interest. It isn't a "gifted" school. He'll be able to mix with a range of ages and abilities and still work at his own pace on some things. I am so excited that this is a possibility.
It is a HUGE relief to know that he has a place to go next year. We will have to make sacrifices to make the finances work, but he will not do well languishing where he is now. He has been getting "ill" at school a lot. I think it is about being bored at school, but I could be wrong. It just seems that he doesn't feel well or is very tired in the afternoons and has headaches. He's been thoroughly checked over by a doctor with x-rays and blood work. He's healthy. We had his eyes checked and he will be getting new glasses next week. We are trying to nip this feeling of malaise he has going on.
We are still awaiting word on the second school we applied for. That one would require more changes in our lives because we would have to move. However, it is only for gifted kids and it requires test scores to get in. The teachers all know the lovely quirks and intensity of gifted kids. It would be great for him to find emotional peers that he can talk to because he has no one to talk to about things he is interested in. His friends don't know about the Titanic or Greek mythology. They might know what a black hole is, but most have no idea who Stephen Hawking is.
I'm not really sure what we'd do if we get offered both. Either would be fantastic opportunities for him. It won't be long before we are looking at kindergarten as well.
