Big Boy Bed

I didn't want to jinx anything, so I waited a week to announce that Dexter gave up his pacifier. I've tried hard to only use it for naptimes, at night and in times of extreme distress (like getting an IV distress). Last Saturday, he threw his pacifier and said "no" before bed. He didn't even ask for it. He didn't sleep so well the first couple of days, but it quickly returned to normal. I hid all of the pacifiers to keep them out of sight and out of mind. He's asked for it a few times, but I just ignored the request and now he's 100% pacifier free!

Tonight is his first night in his converted crib. We removed one side of the crib and replaced it with the toddler rail. He can now get in and out of his bed as he pleases. He has been requesting to be put in his crib a lot lately. After he threw a tantrum about it today, I thought it was time to convert the crib into the toddler bed. He's fallen out of it once already. It's really low to the ground though, so I'm sure that will happen a few more times. I'm a little worried about how he sleeps though. He's all over the place some nights. I put pillows on the floor just in case.

So this week was so incredibly awful. Mr. Cobra came down with appendicitis and had his appendix removed. We thought it was just a bout of stomach flu, but after 36 hours of vomiting and pain we went to the ER early on Tuesday morning because we couldn't get in to see the doctor until late in the afternoon. We waited about an hour before the ER doctor examined him and within 10 minutes we had a diagnosis.

He was admitted to the hospital around 3 in the afternoon and finally had surgery at 7pm that evening. Luckily his appendix hadn't burst, but it was really infected and they had removed it just in time. He spent 3 days in the hospital. It has been really rough because he's very weak and in a lot of pain. It takes months to fully heal from it. The doctor told him he should tell his boss that he needs another week off from work, but his boss is a dick and won't let him - *wink*.

He's going to attempt half days this week. It's not like staying at home would be restful because Dexter is around. He's going to work around Dexter's schedule and go home in the afternoons when Dexter goes to the playground, so he can get some rest. It's awesome to have Dexter at home except when we are sick and would like to be able to rest. Then it's a real pain and work is many times is better to go to than staying home.

Tuesday was also my birthday, which I spent the early morning hours being awoken by his frequent trips to the bathroom to vomit, and then spent 12 hours at the hospital with him. I got home after Dexter went to bed, so I only got to see Dex for a couple hours. If the horrible birthday wasn't enough, we also had to cancel our plans last Saturday to have our first night alone since Dexter was born. We'd planned a fancy dinner and to stay in a hotel and sleep in. I'd really looked forward to it. It was supposed to be a Valentines Day + birthday combo. The next time we have open to reschedule is in May. However, we are going to SXSW though in a couple weeks. It just won't be the fancy date-night we had planned. I'm just glad Mr. Cobra is okay. That's all that matters in the end. I'd go through a million awful days so long as he gets better.
