Inauguration Day

This morning Dexter and I watched the inauguration. Dexter learned to say OBAMA which was so cute. I haven't gotten into politics much since he was born. I just haven't had the time, energy, or mind-space to dedicate to it. Instead, I'm learning about teething, discipline, language development and watching my son grow from baby to toddler. I did vote last November, but spent about 2 hours to research the issues instead of pouring over it like I used to. Today, however, I was happy to blab on and on to Dex about how today was a very important day because we have a new president.

I'm glad that our new president is such an inspiration. We are in a dark, hopeless time marked by war and a grim economy. He has a lot to overcome, but people are so drawn to him. It is hard to criticize the genuineness of his message. We are ready for change, we need change, and I think Obama will motivate people in way that hasn't been seen in a long time. He is raising peoples' spirits by bridging the racial divide and setting a good example that black youth can aspire to. He appeals to everyone – rich, poor, young, old, conservative, liberal, Democrat and Republican. It's hard not to be drawn to a message of unity and a common goal for the greater good. We have been focused for so long on our individuality that we've forgotten that we need to lift each other up whenever we can.

I'm happy that Dexter will never know the great white divide. He will know our leaders as a diverse bunch of people of every race, creed, religion and gender – just like the people they lead. I'm excited to see what the next four years holds.
